Coaching Foundations I & II is the prerequisite for all other workshops.
12-training-hours; in-person or online
This sequence includes an introduction to the theory, research, and concepts at the foundation of coaching in general and the Coaching Conversations program specifically. Participants also explore the characteristics of and boundaries between coaching, informing, educating, mentoring, and counseling. After learning about one specific model for guiding a coaching conversation, participants develop important introductory coaching skills including: generating and asking powerful open-ended questions; practicing engaged, neutral, fully present listening; using observation and reflection to deepen coachee thinking; transitioning in and out of coaching conversations; and applying the coaching model. Finally, participants get to observe coaching demonstrations, practice coaching in several contexts, and learn how to document coaching conversations in IU systems.
Prerequisite: Coaching Foundations I & II
6-training-hours; in-person or online
Participants can deepen their understanding of key skills introduced in Coaching Foundations I & II by completing Coaching Tools. Coaching Tools is ideally completed several weeks -- or even months -- after Coaching Foundations I & II. This gives participants time to practice coaching before exploring coaching tools at a deeper level.
In Coaching Tools, participants continue to practice engaging with others using a coaching approach. They explore the roles that meta-awareness and intuition play in coaching and begin to cultivate the self-management and boundaries necessary to engage in effective coaching. Participants deepen their skills in building rapport, engaged listening, finding themes in a coachee’s intentions and experience, observing coachees’ responses, and giving clear feedback. The skills of championing, acknowledging, and challenging are also comprehensively addressed. Finally, participants analyze additional coaching demonstrations, develop their capacity to be fully present, and practice coaching.
