Empowering IU’s Student-Facing Professionals through Coaching Training

100% of IU’s academic advisors and career professionals have completed the Coaching Conversations Foundations workshop, a gateway experience to the theory and application of coaching that builds essential skills like active listening, open-ended questioning, and student empowerment. This training ensures student-facing staff are equipped to center conversations on students’ goals, challenges, and growth. Now a key part of onboarding for new advisors, Coaching Conversations reflects IU’s ongoing commitment to a student-ready culture.

IU Launches Student Success Coach Initiative to Support 21st Century Scholars

Due to a generous grant from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, Indiana University has provided dedicated support to 21st Century Scholars across all campuses. The program, which embedded 12 success coaches in every campus and IU Online, is designed to enhance student engagement and retention by empowering Scholars to achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals through proactive coaching, personalized guidance, and access to essential resources. This initiative reflects IU’s commitment to advancing equity and supporting the success of Indiana’s future leaders. Nearly $1 million in funding was awarded in the first year, and recognizing the program’s significant impact, the Commission approved a second year of support to build on this success.

IU Commits to Supporting First Gen Students

Indiana University is leading the way in supporting first-generation students through a comprehensive, multi-campus commitment. All IU campuses have joined FirstGen Forward, making IU the largest participant in the nation to follow this national model for holistic first-generation student support. To amplify impact, IU launched two communities of practice focused on sharing evidence-based strategies and fostering collaboration to better serve first-gen students systemwide. Further, IU celebrated its 18,614 first-generation students with campus-based programming and a coordinated social media campaign for National First Gen Day, showcasing the pride, achievements, and support surrounding this vibrant community.

Student Success Platform Launched

Phase I of Stellic, IU’s new student success technology, launched on three IU campuses: IU Columbus, IU East, and IU Fort Wayne. The platform helps students build their degree plan, track their progress and visualize the impact of different decisions along their path to graduation. Additional campuses will onboard to Stellic in Spring and Fall 2025, with additional phases for advising and transfer forthcoming.

Implementation of this new tool will help Indiana University students better visualize their pathway to graduation. It also creates a far better user experience, making it easier for students to successfully plan and obtain their IU degree.

First-year students showing low activity in IU’s learning management system, Canvas, received personalized nudges, encouraging them to access resources like Learning.IU and connect with advisors or success coaches for tailored support. Students who received the emails increased their use of Canvas, which has been associated with higher average GPA.
